MAIA – Macular Integrity Assessment

What is it?
This is a test to measure the integrity and fixation stability of the macula. Available exclusively at the London eye Hospital this test revolutionises the assessment of the macula. It is useful for people with macular degeneration or inherited macular conditions and also to assess visual function in patients with very dense cataracts.

How is it done?
You will place your chin on the instrument chin rest and fixate a red light in the centre of the equipment eyepiece. Flashes of white light will appear on the surrounding screen and you press a button each time you perceive one. The test will typically take 5 minutes per eye.

Before your appointment:
You may wear your contact lenses for this test, otherwise the test will be done without glasses. Dilating eye drops will not be necessary for this test.
